Matthew 28:18-20

Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’ (NIV UK)

What must it have been like to be there, as the resurrected Jesus spoke those words and ascended into heaven?

Having been called by Jesus to follow him, the apostles are now called to go and make disciples. The call is to go to all nations, the tools of discipleship are baptism and the teaching of Jesus. But the resources they need are found, as ever in Jesus, who has been given all authority in heaven and on earth by the Father. More than that, Jesus promises that, as they go, he will always be with them.

These words, of course, come down the centuries to us. Jesus, who called us to follow him, calls us too to go and make disciples. The tools and the resources the same, with the same empowering promise that Jesus is with us as we go.

PRAYER

Almighty God, ruler of heaven and earth, thank you that through Jesus you have called us to yourself. Thank you today for those who told us about Jesus, for those who baptised us, for those that taught us about Christ. Help us and empower us today by your transforming presence to go and make disciples. Send us on mission to our friends and families where we live, and if you call us, send us to the nations, that the whole world might know Jesus. Amen
