In a world where everyone loves to have all the answers, Thomas’ honesty is refreshing.
And his honest question of Jesus leads to a stunning revelation from Jesus: “I am the way and the truth and the life” (v6a). Jesus is the only way to God – a heresy to our wider society – but Jesus is clear: “No one comes to the Father except through me” (v6b). The wonderful news of Christ’s coming, is that because of Jesus, there is a way for us to God. Jesus is also the truth about God. If we want to know what God is like says Jesus, you can find out through me: “if you really know me, you know my Father as well” (v7). And coming to Jesus we discover life: life as it was always intended to be lived.
On this Christmas day, we hear from Jesus the truth that scripture has been proclaiming all through this Advent season: when we meet Jesus, we meet God himself.
As we celebrate Christ’s coming today, we can be sure that he
remains the way, the truth and the life for us, and for all who put their hope in him.
