John 15:9-14

‘As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.’ (NIV UK)

What wonderful words to greet us today, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you”.

Through Jesus we are invited into the incredible, eternal love that exists between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. He calls us to remain there: why would we want to go anywhere else? The way to remain in this love is to follow Jesus example of obedience to the Father. To live like this is not to be trapped in slavish obedience to God, but rather to know the joy of being set free to live life as it was really intended.

This love of God for us is to overflow in our lives: we are to love others as Christ has loved us, giving our lives sacrificially for others.

May love for God and love for others characterise our lives today.

PRAYER

Our Father, thank you for the love you have poured out into our lives through Jesus. Thank you for calling us into relationship with you. Help us today to know the freedom and joy that comes from living life with you and for you. Empower us through your love to love others, and to follow the example of Jesus in living a life of loving sacrifice. Amen
